Types of Gearboxes for Servo Motors

What Are Gearboxes Used For?

Gearboxes are used in motion-driven systems such as a robotic arm, to provide high precision, torque multiplication or high torque, speed reduction, stiffness and inertia matching.

Types of Gearboxes

There are many different types of gearboxes. Our range includes:

Servo Gearboxes

Servo gearboxes are used to enable maximum precision and exceptional torque density. We supply a wide range of WITTENSTEIN servo gearboxes ideal for many different applications and performance ranges.

Servo Right Angle Gearboxes

Servo right-angle gearboxes have an input shaft and an output shaft that meet at a 90-degree angle. This allows torque to be transmitted from one axis to a perpendicular axis. Types of servo right angle gearboxes include worm, bevel and hypoid gearboxes. WITTENSTEIN has a broad portfolio of servo right-angle gearboxes suitable for the most diverse applications.

Planetary Gearboxes

A planetary gearbox is where the input and output shafts are aligned. Planetary gearboxes are used to transfer the largest torque in the most compact form (known as torque density) such as increasing the torque in a robot, reducing the speed of printing press rollers or precise positioning.

Types of planetary gearboxes in our range include:

  • Rack and pinion – offers high levels of rigidity, dynamics and precision using an electronic tensioning system. This planetary gearhead offers exceptional movement speed, acceleration with low moments of inertia and precise control characteristics thanks to constant linear rigidity.
  • Alpha IQ – allows measurement, diagnosis and assessment of parameters directly to improve the stability of processes. The Alpha IQ planetary gearbox measures parameters such as X and Y direction, temperature and torque.
  • Servo actuators – introducing servo actuators to the same housing as a planetary gearbox is a great way to enhance power density. Featuring very high dynamic performance in a convenient, compact package allows these actuators to be integrated into an existing system easily.

Low Backlash Gearboxes

Low backlash gearboxes are suitable for many applications including industrial, energy aerospace and simulation. Their increased power density improves motor capacity utilisation and enables their use in even more dynamic processes.

Benefits of low backlash gearboxes include:

  • High power density, low backlash and high torsional rigidity
  • Flexible, variable systems consisting of several innovative components
  • Maximised speeds and improved positioning accuracy which offers maximum compact precision
  • Higher output torques and output speeds with a larger range of ratios
  • Versatile installation where the gearheads can be installed vertically, horizontally or with the output facing upwards or downwards
  • Simple to install motor with integrated thermal length compensation as an option
  • Gearheads of low backlash worm gearboxes run smoothly with a much quieter operation
  • Extremely long life span
