Bearings

Types of Bearings and Bearing Functions

There are various types of bearings, each with its unique function. We supply a wide range of igus bearings suitable for various engineering solutions, high loads, underwater usage, chemical resistance, extreme temperatures, and more. Some of the bearing types we supply include:

  • Roller Bearings - carries the load with rolling elements (e.g. balls) between two ring bearings, which results in minimal resistance and sliding
  • Spherical Bearings - designed to withstand high radial loads, the outer housing minimises friction with self-lubrication
  • Glider Bearings - features dry or lubricated gliding pads which are commonly in friction contact with large steel disks

Linear Bearings

Linear bearings are used primarily in machinery that requires linear movement and positioning along shafts. Linear bearings have lower friction and higher accuracies compared with bushings. Linear bearings are more expensive and more complex than bushings. Linear bearings are available in a range of sizes and types. Linear bearings can be used for a variety of purposes, such as in machinery.

Flange Bearings

Flange bearings are a type of bearing that uses a flange to mount the bearing on a shaft or in a housing. There are two main types of flange bearings: clip and screw mounting solutions. Flange bearings are lightweight and maintenance-free. They come in different sizes to fit a variety of applications. Flange bearings are available in different configurations to suit a variety of needs.

Plain Bearings

Plain bearings are maintenance-free bearings with long service life. In our range, we have two types of igus Iglidur Polymer Plain Bearings - General purpose and Long service. Our general purpose plain bearings include iglidur G, iglidur K, iglidur P and iglidur GLW. These plain bearings are lubrication, corrosion and maintenance-free while featuring a lightweight design. Our long service plain bearings include iglidur J260, iglidur J3, iglidur J350, iglidur L250, iglidur R, iglidur D, iglidur J200, iglidur J and iglidur W. These plain bearings are also lightweight and corrosion, lubrication & maintenance free.

Slewing Ring Bearings

Slewing ring bearings are used to support axial and radial loads. They are easy to install with interchangeable sliding pads and are ideal for use in environments that require high stiffness and high load capabilities. Slewing ring bearings are maintenance-free and have high wear resistance. We supply a range of ready-to-fit slewing ring bearings including the Iglidur PRT slewing ring bearing, iglidur PRT HT slewing ring bearing and the iglidur PRT Toothed slewing ring bearing.

Drylin Linear Bearings

Drylin Linear Bearings are a type of bearing that can be used in multiple industries and sectors. Some of these industries and sectors include:

  • Machine building,
  • In the wood working industry,
  • Machine tools,
  • Handling,
  • Agriculture,
  • Vehicle manufacturing,
  • Medical,
  • Structural facings sector,
  • Packaging,
  • Furniture,
  • Robotics and the sheet metal industry.

Drylin Bearings use high-performance polymers (motion plastics), are designed for dry running (which protects them from exposure to grease and oil), have a very quiet operation, have no minimum stroke length restrictions and are maintenance-free & resistant to external influences.

Iglidur Bearings

Iglidur bearings are available in three different types: general purpose, long service and corrosion resistant.

  1. General purpose Iglidur bearings are suitable for a broad range of applications where low speed and moderate loads are anticipated. These types of Iglidur bearings have good wear resistance and can operate without lubrication.
  2. Long service life Iglidur bearings are designed for higher loads and speeds, and can also operate without the need for lubrication. These types of Iglidur bearings have excellent wear resistance and are ideal for high-speed applications.
  3. Corrosion-resistant Iglidur bearings are perfect for harsh environments where other bearing materials would fail prematurely. These types of Iglidur bearings have a special coating that protects them from corrosion, making them ideal for use in food processing or medical applications.

Polymer Ball Bearings

Polymer ball bearings (or Plastic ball bearings) are a more cost-effective alternative to metal ball bearings. They have a longer service life than metal ball bearings. Polymer ball bearings are lightweight and can operate at a minimum temperature of -100°C and a maximum temperature of +150°C. Polymer ball bearings are 100% lubricated and maintenance-free. Polymer ball bearings are FDA compliant. In addition, they are resistant to corrosion and chemicals, non-magnetic, and can be used underwater. They are suitable for many applications where conventional metal ball bearings are not effective.
