Types Of Encoders

What Is An Encoder?

An encoder (also referred to as a shaft encoder or rotary encoder), is an electro-mechanical sensing device used in machinery that converts motion or a rotary position into an electrical signal that can be read by a control device in a motion control system. Encoders are used to determine position, count, speed or direction.

Type Of Encoders

There are two main types of encoders; Absolute encoders and Incremental encoders.

Absolute Encoders

Absolute encoders are used to maintain position information when power is removed from the encoder.. It can tell you the exact position of the shaft in its rotation once power is restored and how many rotations have transpired.

Incremental Encoders

An incremental encoder only reports a change in position or provides information about the motion of a shaft (which it does immediately), but it can only do this if it has an index or home position.

Where Are Encoders Used And What Are Encoders Used For?

Rotary encoders are used in a wide range of applications where monitoring and/or control of mechanical systems is required. Examples include robotics, conveying, automation, sorting, filling, imaging / printing, metalworking, woodworking, packaging / bottling, crane lifts / industrial elevators and more.

Examples of what encoders are used for include:

  • Measuring the length of material
  • Determining angular positions
  • Monitoring the position of products
  • Tracking the position of automated robots
  • Satellite tracking
  • Road surface analysis
  • Automobile suspension studies
  • To control the timing and speed of bottle rotation
  • Activating a print head to create a mark at a specific location
  • To provide positioning feedback so a crane knows when to pick up or release its load
